A ROAD LESS TRAVELED
A Road Less Traveled
Ironhorse Writer
©3/15/2002

Over a shoulder his world exists
A result of opportunities missed
Child of the street, man of the road
Keeps to himself, true to the code

Desired by the ladies
By their husbands too
Wanted by the law
But that ain't nothin' new

For he rides a road less traveled
On thunder, steel and chrome
No ties, no suits, no family roots
America's his home

Another town, first light of day
He's greeted by the local stray
Shares his sandwich, bares in mind
He and the stray are two of a kind

With a pet, a wag, they leave opposite ways
Two kindred outcasts, societal strays
A glance to the mirror, last chance to see
A town, a dog, a memory

For he rides a road less traveled
On thunder, steel and chrome
No ties, no suits, no family roots
America's his home

The wind whispers of others
A heritage of brothers
Carved of legacy
Destined to be free

Of those like him, long since passed
Wayward souls in shadows cast
Silent specters, who guide his way
Through towns named Anywhere, USA

For he rides a road less traveled
On thunder, steel and chrome
No ties, no suits, no family roots
America's his home

RIDE OF FAITH, (One for Sunday)
Ride Of Faith
Ironhorse Writer
©5/24/2002

I know it's been awhile Lord
Kinda, hit n miss
'Bout my goin' more to church
Ya see, it goes like this

It ain't that I forgot ya
Ain't that I don't care
I'm ridin' nearly everyday
I see ya everywhere

The wind ya send to greet me
We go back quite a ways
I used to keep it on its toes
In my younger days

The rain that riders tend to watch
Sippin' Lattés, inside
Cleanses this 'ol Biker's soul
With faith is how I ride

Nothin' I welcome more
Than the sun upon my face
Thankfully I'll take it Lord
Anytime or place

I'm grateful for the scenery
And all who truly care
The kids who smile and wave at me
Even those who stare

'Bout them fancy church folk Lord
Who swear they praise your name
Come Friday night, they swear real good
'Cept it don't quite sound the same

Lord, I hope you understand
I may not always abide
Least I ain't a hypocrite
With faith is how I ride

NATURALLY
Naturally
Ironhorse Writer

I'm a guy, simply stated
Never over complicated
Playing a hand that life has dealt to me
From young and stupid to old and wise
With each gray hair I realize
I prefer what comes, naturally

Used to spit against the wind
But quickly learned to call it friend
It helps to spread my wings, sets me free
I ride to write of moments made
The blood and ink are dues I've paid
To spread the 'ridden' word, naturally

My Guardian Angel must be tired
But I thank God that he was hired
Otherwise, I'd be history
I know he saved my butt from hell
But both of us know damn well
All good things come, naturally

Not all roads are smooth and straight
We're fueled by destiny, led by fate
Brother, that's the way it's meant to be
Laws of nature we must abide
For us, it's in how we ride
Bikers always do it, naturally

Asphalt Angels (A Biker Prayer)

Asphalt Angels
Ironhorse Writer
© 01/01/2004

Dear Lord,
A word, if I may
I suppose one could say
This constitutes
An attempt to pray
Neither selfishness nor greed
Rather, a heartfelt need
For Asphalt Angels
To intercede

Please Lord,
Protect us from cagers
Fumbling for pagers
Driving with pets on their lap
Cell phones in hand
Please understand
I'm tired of dealing with this crap

Oh Lord,
Help me to see
Mercifully
Keep, 'Thou Shalt Not Kill'
An option for me
I shall abide
If you will provide
Asphalt Angels
On every ride

Amen

SoA, (soapbox)

Ok, here's my take on SoA....First, my credentials::

Over 30 years of eating bugs, inhaling dirt, exhaust, manure, etc...Dodging cigarette butts, cagers, dogs as well as a varied assortment of wildlife, (inclusive of which is the unpredictable two leg-ged species).

Associating with a veritable plethora of societal outcasts, misfits, dregs, lowlifes, barflys....ahh, the good life.  Ok, you get the picture.

I'm not a big "TV" person, however, I do enjoy SoA as it represents, not so much a point of view, but a general shift of mindset altogether.  I enjoyed watching Indian Larry on the tube but rapidly burned out on the American Chopper, Jesse James overkill.

Graybeards such as I may remember a series from way, way back called, "Then Came Bronson", starring Michael Parks, about a sole rider who drifted from town to town.  That was one of my pivotal moments of indoctrination into what would become "my" way of life.

SoA, with some expanding storylines, involving additional Bikers, (incuding other SoA Charters Members), hanger ons, prospects, etc, has the potential of attracting a vast array of citizens.

SoA, is to the general perception of the Biker Culture, what Sam Elliott represented to Westerns, a beginning to a gritty, somewhat realistic insight, to the down n dirty, hardcore inner sanctum of the so called Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs.

Well, my soapbox is creaking...Better get off.

Thanks for the moment....

ODE TO TIGERMAN
I've got a Tigerman by the tail
Oh wait, it's Loser69
Seems this boy's confused
Dude, make up your mind

You're craving our attention
Some might say you beg
If only the best part of you
Hadn't run down your daddy's leg

Buddarow
Buddarow,

Add whatever comments that are Biker / SoA related. I'm guilty of straying at times but hey, I wouldn't be who I am if I followed the rules, now would I?

Welcome Brother

Response to Loser69's SONS IS PUTRID
I was about to ponder on a witty, though appropriately concise response to your comment....One that would pay homage to the mentality, the personna of one who would bestow upon us such, dare I say, intellect....Then....there it was...In front of me the entire time...Your username.
Ahhh, sweet irony....thou hast served us well.

Self Serving

Ok...Here is my one and only, (maybe), pitch to incorporate other elements of the Biker realm within SoA.

Much along the lines of a previous comment concisely stated that, with any MC there exists those who hang out on occasion. That being a known fact, perhaps a Biker Poet who occasionally minstrels by for comraderie and to spew verse.

Hey SoA producers, Google Biker Poets, Biker Poetry, Biker Poems, etc, and you'll find, within the Biker community, a growing ground swell of talent to tap into. If anything, lyric potential for future themes by the real deals.

Folks, it does not have to be me....Just check it out. After all, much of our endearing Cowboy folklore is based upon the prose scribed by Cowboy Poets throughout our western history.  Biker Poetry is the natural offshoot of those pioneers of prose.  It's Cowboy Poetry upon a Steel Steed.

Read what Bikers are riding about.

Thank you for consideration folks,

Freedom's Prospect
Freedom's Prospect
Ironhorse Writer

© 6/26/2002

He sat alone in disbelief
"I'm gonna be a God"
The so called local Outlaw Club
Had given him the nod

Thought about how life would change
How he'd finally gain respect
With but one little word sewn on his vest,
Simply stating, Prospect

So deep within euphoria
Completely unaware
He failed to notice the silhouette
The figure standing there

That deafening thud atop the desk
The crack of a leather case
Jumped up, turned and gazed upon,
His grandfather's weathered face

"Have a seat, we need to talk
Between you and me
Before you go and jump the gun
There's something you should see."

The old man sat across the desk
"I brought this down for you
I haven't opened this 'ol case,
Since 1952"

The binding fought to keep a hold,
Of secrets within it's embrace
But leather too, grows frail with age
Thus, opened the case

Old photos unraveled a timely tale
Of but one American son
Who realized, returning from war
His battle had just begun

"See the kid sitting on that scoot
Once I knew him well
He also sought to be a God
But all he found was hell"

The old man, through eyes that welled
Spoke in shallow breath
Of youth discarded, a wasted life
Knowing the face of death

"He fought to keep his country free
And all that he held true
But lost himself along the way
That kid that I once knew"

"Back at home, things had changed
As did his frame of mind
A life once his, before he'd left
Had seemed like worlds behind"

"Those, once friends, who welcomed him
Dwindled to a few
Of those, like him, returning home
Sought only a soldiers due"

"Grandpa, how does this tie in
With what Ichoose to be?
These photographs, this kid you knew
Have nothing to do with me"

"Nothing, and everything
Decisions that we make
Are you prepared for what they'll ask?
Prepared for what they'll take?"

"I know somewhat of joining up
Of wanting to be free
That kid I once knew oh so well?
Well once, that kid was me"

"I was blind to who I was
For want of some respect
I had it there, all along
As Freedom's Prospect."

"Keep the case and all it holds
It may just help you see
The want of respect begins with one's self
The first true step of the free."

Kin in the Wind

Kin in the Wind

A greybeard biker

A white-muzzled mutt

A side car scoot

Named, 'Three Leg-ged Putt'

Bedroll, dog bowl

Sandwich to share

A squint, a pant

Off to anywhere

Two old dogs

Kin in the wind

One beyond tricks

The other beyond sin

Howling at the moon

Picking off fleas

Chasing life

Faces in the breeze

Nature calls

All too abrupt

Its, gear kicked down

Hind leg up

Off the highway

An old dirt road

Biker and dog

In kickback mode

Were burning daylight

Said with a grin

Off to anywhere

Once again

Two old dogs

Kin in the wind

The bond of Freedom

Burns within

Chasing life

Is all they need

Inherent of

An American Breed

Living on the highway
A life of paying dues
Freedom bears a price tag
When nothing's left to lose

A fire dwells within my soul
It's burning scar runs deep
Seeds, long sewn, harvest a toll
Sins, for which I reap

Know me as the Highwayman
Seek not my name nor face
I ride upon
The dusk and dawn
Within this cursed race

Friendship often breeds deceit
Loyalty tends to lack
The only friend I look to greet
Is the wind upon my back

Love can be a cruel game
That leaves a heart in debt
It cares not who is left to blame
Nor who has placed the bet

Know me as the Highwayman
Seek not my name nor face
I ride upon
The dusk and dawn
Within this cursed race
